Road to the Oscars

...

The Oscars are now less than a month away, and the task that I have in hand of seeing all the nominated films in such short time is proving quite difficult I have to say.

Every year I try to watch all the movies nominated for best picture at least and this year is no exception.

From the 9 nominees I already checked 3, which still leaves me with a very long list to check until February 24th.

Until then I'm sharing with you a little review of each movie I saw for now: Les Miserables, Silver Linings Playbook and Argo.

...

A passionate musical in my opinion. The risk taken by the director by recording the musics sang live on set instead of the traditional way of pre-recording it in studio and playback on the shoot, has totally paid off, especially on Anne Hathaway's "I dreamed a dream" solo. We can feel her emotions through her voice and be utterly touched by it.

This well known novel of french writer Victor Hugo, follows the life of the tormented ex convict Jean Valjean, brilliantly played by Hugh Jackman, and his unceasing escape from the relentless Inspector Javert, Russel Crowe.

In the midst of his journey he ends up adopting Cosette, the young daughter of Fantine (Anne Hathaway), his former factory worker turned prostitute. And event that changes their lives forever.

A tale of love, revolution, injustice, but above all, hope.

Close to 3 hours of singing, where there are just a few "normal" speeches, which might seem intimidating, but that can actually capture the viewer's attention from the very first scene until the end.

Silver Linings Playbook

...

This romantic comedy, nominated for 8 Oscars, is everything but the ordinary Hollywood comedy that we're used to seeing.

The leads are two slightly disturbed young man and woman, Pat, played by Bradley Cooper, a bipolar professor who just got out of a mental institution where he was locked up for 8 months for beating up a colleague who was sleeping with his wife, and Tiffany, Jennifer Lawrence, a young widow who is learning how to deal with the premature death of her cop husband. The two meet in a very disturbing dinner and eventually they end up getting along after stalking, confrontations and odd deals.

The story follows the highs and lows of both of them while Pat deals with his dysfunctional family and tries to get back together with his ex-wife with a little "help" from Tiffany, but only if he agrees to be her partner in a dance competition.

A film that talks about mental illnesses and psychological problems in a different way, in an intelligent, comic and unconventional way. With remarkable interpretations from Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro, it is definitely a filme that you should not miss.

Argo

...

Ben Affleck keeps on proving what he's worth as a director after "Gone Baby Gone" and "The Town" with this film that tells the true story about the rescue of 6 american citizens from Iran in the 70's and that already has won him a Golden Globe for Best Director.

But this is not a traditional rescue, to bring these 6 Embassy employees that are hidden by the Canadian Ambassador back to the United States alive, a CIA extraction expert, Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), has to pretend to be a Canadian film producer that wants to shoot a sci-fi film, "Argo", in Iran, all the while having to train the 6 fugitives to play the role of their lives as the rest of the film production crew.

It's a contagious thriller with an energetic pace, where the tension builds up into the big climax at the end that has us stuck to the screen until the very last minute.

Which movies have you seen, and what are your thoughts?

I'll be back with more news and reviews.
